Lifting and Rigging Equipment, and What We Supply
I know the job. Which one do I actually need?
Slings and lashings are often confused. A sling is rated to lift. A lashing is rated to hold a load down. Only some chain grades are rated to lift, and wire rope only when it is made up as a rated sling. Fibre rope is not rated for either. Pick your job below to find the right page.

Every family, and what each one is rated for
Check the middle column first. It shows which items are rated to lift.
| Family | Rated to lift a load overhead | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Webbing Slings | Yes, to EN 1492-1 | Lifting on a crane or hoist. Soft on painted surfaces. The colour shows the capacity, and the label states it |
| Chain | Grade 80 alloy only. Galvanised general purpose, never | Grade 80 for lifting. Galvanised for fencing, gates and security. Galvanised is a finish, not a grade |
| Lifting Machines | Yes, within the machine's marked capacity | Chain blocks, lever hoists, electric hoists and folding engine cranes. Electric machines need your power supply confirmed first |
| Rigging Hardware | Rated components only, marked as such | Shackles, wire rope clips, thimbles, turnbuckles, eye bolts and pulley blocks. Drop-forged, not cast |
| Wire Rope | No, unless supplied as a rated sling | Winching, guying and cut-to-length assemblies. Galvanised for outdoor and marine, ungalvanised where it works dry. Also called steel cable |
| Cargo Lashing & Recovery | No. A lashing capacity is not a working load limit | Ratchet straps and lashing belts for securing a load for transport, and straps for vehicle recovery. The two ratings are tested differently |
| Rope | No | Sisal, manila, polypropylene, polyester and nylon on one page. Agriculture, marine, hauling and general work. Quoted by the kilo and by the metre |
A sling lifts. A lashing secures.
They look alike and are both made of woven polyester. A sling is rated to hold a load in the air. A lashing is rated to stop a load moving on a truck bed.
Never lift with a lashing. If you are not sure which one you have, send us a photo of the label before you use it.
Galvanised is a finish, not a grade.
Bright galvanised chain costs much less than black Grade 80 chain. It is not a cheaper version of the same thing. It is a different product, with no lifting rating.
The grade is stamped on the links. If you cannot find the grade, treat the chain as unrated.
What we will not do
We do not calculate working load limits, and we do not tell you what capacity your load needs. Those figures come from the maker's tables and from the person in charge of the lift on your site.
We do not certify equipment either. A thorough examination must be done by a registered plant examiner, not by the seller.
Not listed here? Ask anyway.
The seven families above each have a page, but we quote more than these. If you have a page or a part number from a maker's catalogue, send it to us.
Your requests also help us decide which items to add to the site.
Our team also builds ziplines and ropes courses.
Not sure which one
Tell us the job: what you are lifting or securing, how heavy it is, and where it is going.
