Chain: Grade 80 Lifting Chain, Chain Slings and Load Chain, Nairobi

Which chain can I lift with?

Belay Rigging supplies Grade 80 lifting chain in Nairobi from 6 to 32 mm, quoted to the length you ask for, along with made-up chain slings and the load chain that goes back into a worn chain block. Galvanised chain is on this page too, further down and kept apart, because it is general purpose chain that must never lift. You order on WhatsApp.

Choose what you need

Chain by the metre, chain slings and the fittings that go on them. Galvanised is further down, on its own. Each card opens WhatsApp with the item already filled in.

Black or silver

The black chain is for lifting. The bright zinc chain is general purpose and is not for lifting.

Lifting chain. Black self-colour, with a grade mark stamped into the steel every few links.
Galvanised chain Kenya, general purpose link chain
General purpose chain. Bright zinc, no mark anywhere along it, and no rating to lift.

What we list, and in what size

What sizes of Grade 80 chain do you supply in Nairobi?

8, 10 and 13 mm are standard. 6, 7, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26 and 32 mm and Grade 100 are sourced to order.

Grade 80 lifting chain and the components that go on it. Every component is sized to the chain it goes on, so the diameter is the one figure we need from you.

Load chain for chain blocks

Do you make up chain slings to length?

Yes. Chain slings are made up to EN 818-4, one to four leg, to the reach you give us. Some buyers call them lifting chains with hooks. Tell us the number of legs, the chain size, the reach and the hook type at the bottom.

Built from
Master link, Grade 80 chain legs, and clevis grab or sling hooks with latches
What we need from you
Number of legs, chain size, reach, and the hook type at the bottom
Shortening
Clutches fitted where a leg has to be taken up on the job rather than at the bench

Reading the mark, not the colour

How do I tell Grade 80 lifting chain from galvanised chain?

The finish does not show the grade. Black chain is not necessarily Grade 80, and paint on a fitting is a coating, not a rating.

The grade is stamped into the steel. On chain made to EN 818-2 it appears on a link at intervals along the length, most often as 8, 80, G8 or T8 for Grade 80, and 10 or G10 for Grade 100. On forged components made to EN 1677-1 it is stamped into the body beside the size.

Two checks in the yard. Check a link in the middle of a run as well as at the end, because chains get joined and the joined length can be a different chain. Then check every fitting on a made-up sling, because an unmarked fitting has no rating.

What lifting chain is not for

Grade 80 chain is made to carry a load in the air. It is not the chain for strapping a load onto a lorry bed. That is transport chain, and it lives on cargo lashing and recovery with the binders that tension it.

Do not use it for towing, security or fencing either. Recovery work puts shock into a chain made for a steady pull, and the damage does not show on the outside.

Galvanised chain is not rated to lift, so it has its own section and its own order link, apart from the table above.

Load chain for a chain block

Can I buy load chain for a chain block on its own?

The load chain usually wears out before the rest of a chain block does. Once it is stretched, bent, or thinned where the links bear on each other, the block is out of service.

Send the make and capacity off the block's plate, the chain size, and the fall you need. Bring the old chain if the plate has gone, because a worn chain still measures. It is quoted to the fall, and it goes back into the machine you already own.

Galvanised chain, general purpose, never lifting

Is galvanised chain safe for lifting?

No. Galvanised chain is not rated to lift any load. This is the bright silver chain sold for fencing, gates, security, animal tethering and hanging signs. It is graded 30 or 43 in mild steel, hot dip or electro galvanised, and it carries no grade mark anywhere along the link.

We supply it in the common sizes with quick links to suit, and we quote it on its own line so it does not go on the same delivery note as lifting chain. For lifting, use the Grade 80 chain in the table above.

How long it takes

The standard sizes and the common components are the quickest to source. Anything outside that takes longer, so give us a working day before you need it on site.

Made-up slings take longer than chain by the metre, because each sling is made up with its fittings before anything leaves. Larger diameters and imported items run longer again.

Tell us the date the job starts and the town it is in. We quote the price, the source time and the delivery against that date, in one message.

Delivery and how we quote

Nairobi goes by rider for small loads and van for heavy or long ones. Anywhere else in Kenya goes by courier or bus parcel to the town you name. Uganda and Tanzania are quoted per consignment with transit confirmed before you pay anything.

You get the price and the date in the same message. The quote holds for seven days.

Will you tell me what my chain can lift?

No. The working load limit for a lift is settled by whoever is responsible for that lift, from the maker's documentation for the exact chain and fittings in front of them. It does not come from a web page or a WhatsApp reply, ours included. We pass on whatever certificate and load table the maker issues. Full detail on delivery and how we work.

Order chain

Send the size, the length or the reach, and the quantity on WhatsApp. If it is load chain for a block, send the make and capacity of the block as well.
